Financial calculators for margin, marketing, and growth

Nineteen calculators for the numbers behind pricing, campaign, and investment decisions. Each one shows the result and the formula that produced it, so you can defend the number in the room where it gets used.

Start with the question

Pick the decision in front of you, or search if you already know the metric.

19 calculators

All 19 calculators

Every calculator runs on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

How the calculators work

Three steps, the same on every page.

  1. Start with the decision

Pick a question above and the list narrows to the calculators that answer it.

  2. Enter your figures

Each calculator opens with sample numbers. Replace them and the result, formula, and reading update together.

  3. Share the result

Copy a link that reopens with your figures in place, or copy the result into a report.

What every calculator page gives you

An answer is only useful if you can explain where it came from.

The formula

See how the answer was reached

Every result sits above the formula that produced it, with each term defined in plain language. When a number gets challenged in a meeting, you can show the math instead of asking people to trust it.

The reading

A sentence, not just a percentage

A bare 40 percent does not say whether that is good. Each result comes with a plain reading of what it means, and inputs that cannot produce an answer get an explanation instead of a broken number.

The link

Send the numbers, not a screenshot

Copy a link and whoever opens it sees the same calculator with your figures and currency already filled in. They can change an input and see the effect, which a screenshot never allows.

Got questions?

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Markup is profit as a share of the cost. A 50 percent markup is a 33.3 percent margin, which is why the two are so often confused in pricing decisions.

Which calculator should I use to judge an ad campaign?

ROAS for the immediate revenue return, CAC for what a customer costs to win, and LTV to CAC for whether that cost is sustainable. Read them together rather than one at a time.

Why does each calculator have its own page?

Each calculator page carries the formula, a worked example, and notes on where the number misleads, so the explanation sits next to the calculation it describes.

Are these calculators free to use?

Yes. Every calculator runs in your browser, nothing is sent to a server, and no account is required. Results can be shared as a link that reopens with your figures filled in.

More tools for running the business

Free, in the browser, and nothing to sign up for.

Numbers are the easy part

Getting the calculation right takes two inputs. Getting an organization to agree on what counts as gain, what counts as cost, and what the number should change takes considerably longer.

That translation work is most of what I do. Westphal Solutions builds websites, tools, and reporting for nonprofits and growing teams, including the measurement setup that makes a number like this one worth trusting.
